The Matthew approaching the Coast of Newfoundland in 1497

The Matthew approaching the Coast of Newfoundland in 1497

Description

This painting was commissioned by the Merchant Venturers of Bristol to help commemorate their re-enactment of the original voyage of John Cabot’s ship Matthew, by building a replica of the vessel and repeating the voyage 500 years later.   This was painted from the lines plans for the replica, drawn up by the Naval Architect, Colin Mudie, before it was built.
