HMS Warrior 1860

HMS Warrior 1860

Description

Commissioned by the Captain of the ship.  This painting shows HMS Warrior leaving Portsmouth Harbour on her first commission in 1861.  She was built as Britain’s first ironclad battleship to counter the perceived threat of the French battleship ‘Gloire’.  HMS Warrior never fired a shot in anger and she can now be seen in her berth in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
