15 Metres Off Cowes before 1914

Description

This painting depicts yachts of the 15 Metre Class shown short tacking against the tide before 1914, racing in the Solent. D10, The Lady Anne is in the lead, D5 Hispania (number hidden) and D3 Jeano come next. They are closely followed by D1 Mariska, (just tacking), and Sophie Elizabeth D6. All bar Jeano are William Fife designs. Hispania was owned by King Alfonso XIII of Spain and inshore is the Spanish Royal Yacht, Giralda with a black hull and built in 1894.
